The Race Team is for riders who are looking to achieve a high level of proficiency in mountain biking. Stowe Mountain Bike Academy (SMBA) coaches will work with riders to refine their bike handling techniques and improve fitness for an overall faster, more fun bike experience. Through progression based coaching supported with video analysis, riders will receive constructive skills instruction to take their trail riding to the highest possible level.
Riders should be comfortable riding any type of mountain bike trail from root-gnarled singletrack to fast flow trails and be able to complete at least a 10 mile mountain bike ride within two hours. For example, Race Team riders are comfortable with clearing the jumps on Florence as well as technical singletrack such as the climbs on Aaron’s Loop.
This group will visit a variety of riding locations around Washington and/or Lamoille County to push their skill level and gain experience on challenging new trail networks. Sessions may start at 8:30 or earlier on occasion to accommodate travel to riding locations outside of Stowe.
Skills addressed in this group will include: high speed cornering, line choice in challenging terrain, advanced climbing techniques, roll downs, drops, and carrying speed through bumpy terrain.
Trailside video feedback as well as analysis using the Sprongo platform will be incorporated at practice to highlight opportunities for skill advancement. Timed laps and trail sections will also be recorded at several points throughout the spring season.
Racing and event opportunities are encouraged at this level but not required. Events the Race Team may participate in include: VTYC group rides and races, select Catamount weekly race series, select Craftsbury weekly race series, Eastern States Cup Enduro Race Series, VT Grass Routes Enduro, and others.
Meeting twice a week builds strength, endurance and provides the best opportunity to build the racing skills “toolkit” and achieve the rider success. We at SMBA look forward to getting to know each rider and helping them progress their riding and have a great time riding bikes!
In addition to on-bike skills, other topics covered include: rider risk and reward tradeoff following the Flyin’ Ryan Foundation model, advance bike adjustments to conserve rider energy to enhance overall ride performance, nutrition for sustained energy at races and training rides, and stretches and strengthening exercises to improve overall fitness.
Race Ream will meet for practice at the Trapps Family Lodge Outdoor Center, Cady Hill Forest or other local Stowe Trail Heads. Transportation can be arranged if needed.
