Rippers

Riders in the “Ripper” category should be comfortable with the basic mountain bike skills of braking, standing with level pedals, shifting, and riding introductory singletrack mountain bike trails.

This group will progress their balance and maneuverability on the bike through drills and games in a grass field environment with use of ramps, logs, jumps, and other features. These skills will then be taken to the trails to ride a combination of doubletrack and singletrack. Learning the fundamentals to good bike handling skills will create a solid foundation for safe and fun trail riding.

In addition to on-bike skills, other topics covered include: rider risk and reward tradeoff following the Flyin’ Ryan Foundation model, putting in the climb to earn the descent, biking/trail lingo, bike anatomy, applying feedback/encouragement to advance skills, and how to support your fellow rider.

As the season progresses and local trail conditions improve (dry out), this group will have the opportunity to advance their skills in Cady Hill trail system.

Rippers will meet for practice at the Stowe Middle School, Trapps Family Lodge Outdoor Center or Cady Hill Trail System. Parents will receive a schedule of ride locations at the prior to the start of practice.

Equipment: Bike in good working condition, helmet, camelbak or water bottle/cage

Shredders

Suggested Age: 8-13

Riders in the “Shredder” category should be comfortable riding a variety of singletrack trails where we will encounter rocks, roots, and logs. Riders should also have a strong grasp on skills such as: controlled braking, front wheel lift, standing climbing, and leaning the bike into corners.

The ‘singletrack shredders” in this group will learn and improve on existing skills to smoothly ride over all variety of natural features, lean into corners, weight the bike properly on the trail, and flow like water! Riders can expect to ride primarily singletrack trails and cover 5-7 miles over two hours.

Shredders will take the lesson's highlighted skill to the trail and session the feature, ride it, receive on-trail feedback, and have an opportunity to retry and apply.

In addition to on-bike skills, other topics covered include: rider risk and reward tradeoff following the Flyin’ Ryan Foundation model, bike anatomy and basic maintenance and trailside repairs, how to pack for longer rides, reading the weather, e.g., is it safe to ride?, applying feedback/encouragement to advance skills, and how to support your fellow rider.

As the season progresses and local trail conditions improve (dry out), this group will have the opportunity to advance their skills in Cady Hill and other trail systems in Stowe.

Race Team

Riders in the “Huckster” category should be comfortable riding any type of mountain bike trail from root-gnarled singletrack to fast flow trails and be able to complete a 10 mile mountain bike ride within two hours.

This group will visit a variety of riding locations around Washington and/or Lamoille County to push their skill level and gain experience on challenging new trail networks. Skills addressed in this group will include: high speed cornering, advanced climbing techniques, roll downs, drops, and carrying speed through bumpy terrain.

Hucksters will take the lesson's highlighted skill to the trail and session the feature, ride it, receive on-trail feedback, and have an opportunity to retry and apply. Riders in this group will be prepared to participate in local races and the Vermont Youth Cycling race series.

All field trips will leave from the Stowe Middle/High School. Transportation for athletes and their bikes will be provided by commercial van and trailer. Parents are welcome to join in on any field trip, but transportation for both you and your bike is subject to space availability.

Previous Huckster Field trip locations include: Sterling Forest, Cady Falls, Cady Hill, Perry Hill, Mud City, and Little River

The Race Team is for accomplished riders looking to fine tune their skills. Riders should be comfortable riding any type of mountain bike trail from root-gnarled singletrack to fast flow trails and be able to complete at least a 10 mile mountain bike ride within two hours. For example, Race Team riders are comfortable with clearing the jumps on Florence as well as technical singletrack such as the climbs on Aaron’s Loop.

This group will visit a variety of riding locations around Washington and/or Lamoille County to push their skill level and gain experience on challenging new trail networks. Skills addressed in this group will include: high speed cornering, line choice in challenging terrain, advanced climbing techniques, roll downs, drops, and carrying speed through bumpy terrain.

Trailside video feedback as well as analysis using the Sprongo platform will be incorporated at practice to highlight opportunities for skill advancement. Timed laps and trail sections will also be recorded at several points throughout the spring season. Riders participating in the Race Team are not required to race.

All field trips will leave from the Stowe Middle/High School. Transportation for athletes and their bikes will be provided by commercial van and trailer.

In addition to on-bike skills, other topics covered include: rider risk and reward tradeoff following the Flyin’ Ryan Foundation model, advance bike adjustments to conserve rider energy to enhance overall ride performance, nutrition for sustained energy at races and training rides, and stretches and strengthening exercises to improve overall fitness.

Rippers will meet for practice at the Stowe Middle School, Trapps Family Lodge Outdoor Center or Cady Hill Trail System. Parents will receive a schedule of ride locations at the prior to the start of practice.
